Home What could stop your Network Working Features of Netgear ADSL Wireless Modem Router Services Wireless Security

 !  You are at http://www.chephrenrepairs.com/DG834pn_setup.htm

Realize this: When you initially make contact with the ADSL Router via the Network Cable, the Router will not let you in no Sir....... Oh yes indeed... You must Enter both a user name and password. The Router will probably expect the user name to be admin and the password to be password. These are both case sensitive so do use all lowercase.

You Must Know the Login and Password for the Broadband Connection to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) -- this is the login and password used in the basic settings of the router to connect to the broadband. DO NOT confuse this with the user name and password used to get to the Routers own set up page (See text above the horizontal line above)!

In the box with the Router is the NETGEAR Installation guide, and this is a small piece of paper, but it tells you the address for the Router under instruction 2. the address will be something like

http://192.168.0.1

Just look it up in the NETGEAR Installation Guide to see what the address is exactly.Once you are looking at the Router screen, you need of course to make sure that you set the country and language first, clearly this is UK for country and English for you and I. You will only do this once and will be presented with the opportunity to do so as soon as you connect to the Router.

Setting the Basic Settings

The Basic settings will of course depend upon the actual ISP you are using, but if you do not know what they are then, either find all the paper work you were sent when you set up the broadband connection and read it to find out or ring up the ISP and ask then directly.

for Tiscal Broadband the settings are as follows:

connection type : PPPoA enter your username
enter your password
VPI  0 , VCI  38
Do Not tick any box saying Static IP address

Please note that these settings may be slightly different for your set up, and also Note: that I say Do not tick any Box that says Static IP Address, for this Router their is a radio button that does say Internet Address Get Dynamically from ISP, (this must be ticked), but it is ticked by default. DO NOT un tick it otherwise you will have real problems on your hands namely no internet connection what so ever?!!!!

The Wireless Settings

Here You will set the SSID, The Channel the Region and the mode. In practice you will leave most of these alone but remember: If you change the Channel from 11 (which is the default) you must change the channel on all the wireless cards that are in all the computers you wish to connect to this Router, so it it easier to leave on 11 and most wireless card come set on channel 11 in practice so, no problems here!

Leave Mode set on G and B for most installations, set region to Europe, but it will be anyway so just leave it alone.

You definitely should change the SSID to something that is not the default Netgear, you must change the SSID that you pc's and laptops are looking for where the router is.... obviously to the same!!!

!   Changing the User Name and Password for the Router
What If I use the correct User Name and Password to accessing the Router configuration screen, then I change the password, but then forget what I have changed it to ... What Then!!?......
You May think , Ohhh gosh I would not be silly enough to do that, but you may be, because once you have stopped looking at the main configuration screen and marveling at it, if you log out and then a number of minutes latter go back to the screen, the Router will ask again for the user name and password.!!! If you were sloppy when you typed the password last time and you had a lot on your mind and did not write it down you may just not be able to remember it and the Router will keep asking for it every time you want to access the configuration screen... Remember that the actual configuration screen will in effect be a web page and it will have its own address, therefore if you know the address and you connect your computer to an ethernet port on the back of the router via a network cable, and enter the address into the address bar you will get a prompt asking for the user name and password, but if you have forgotten it or just can't quite remember it, well what do you do?? The answer is of course at chephrenrepairs.com, click Reset Password
