Read our page on Preparing to do a Back Up first, and make an actual written list of what you need before you start.  Back Up Preparation   Please Note: you do need the Product Key of Ghost Ten to install it, and if you do not have this then if you do install Ghost Ten it will only work for a week or so then fail to operate. Ok.. so the first step is to install Ghost Ten. Actually you do need to activate the software but you do not need to register it, is that clear!..

So install the software and activate it, then your ready provided you have everything else you need? We decided to create the image on an external iomega 250gig external USB Drive, But you may choose perhaps to use CDs or us DVD's. It is far easier to use a fair sized External USB Drive for the reason than no changing cds is required. Tip. If you can use DVDS this is better because they are able to hold much more data, Ultimately you must have a CD / DVD Rom drive installed on your system and ideally one that can handle DVD's. .check the documentation for your CD Rom drive carefully.

Once Ghost is installed you will see a little yellow icon in the tool bar, this is where you launch Ghost from. Tip. Before you back up do this. a. update your anti virus software, and run a full scan on every partition you have, b. run Windows Defrag program possibly twice on every partition you have, c up date and run the Anti Spywear program you have and lastly d. run Chkdisk If you do not know how to do all this look it up on the net or go into a reputable computer shop and ask someone for some help. If you do use an External USB Drive, Do Not Detach it from your computer before you click on the tiny icon in your tool bar called Safely Remove Hardware, it is green, click on it, find you Mass storage device and click that, and wait till a massage says it is now safe to remove the device (in this case the drive).
