It is possible to download the software to your computer of the internet, burn it to a DVD, then installed it on a computer, then activate it. We are talking about server 2008 R2 the 180 day version. Once installed you do have I think 10 days to activate it, then the licence will allow you to use it for 180 days.

You should use new DVD -R DVDs, and you should label them straight away using a thin marker pen, only write on the top of the DVD! We made three copies and could only get one of them to work. If you can not get your copy to work, try firstly burning to a different DVD, and installing from that, or secondly use a different DVD drive to burn the next copy, (eg; a USB external DVD drive, there a are some good ones available for about 25.00)

Once you have started your server you really should activate it this gives you the 180 day licence. Ideally you should activate it within 10 days, but I think you can do it after that but may be not after 30 days, If you wait more than 30 days you may have to install the server again.

So how do you activate windows server 2008 R2, well firstly connect the server to you router via a plain cable, that's a regular straight through plain cable. Now go start Adminastrative Tools, then go to Server Manager. Inside here you will see a list of options on the right hand side. One of thouse options will be activate server. (please note; that that option will not be there once you have already activated the server). Once you have activated your server you will see on the bottom right of the blus server screen a message that says" Windows Server 2008 R2 standard windows licence valid for 120 days." That message stays there for the duration of the licence"

Ok so why are we writing about Windows Server 2008 Release 2 trial software?
Well if you want to try out the software and you do not have a buget for buying either a server or the actual Windows Server 2008 R2 Software, then one possible answer you may have is to download the trial version.
This trial version is available and as far as I can tell it is the full software but it only works for 180 days, that is about 6 months.
There are of course lots of questions but if you come back to the Computer Fixer Blog and Search on the term Windows Server 2008 you will find the answers in due course...

Here are some questions: 1. Do you need a computer with windows on it to install the spftware onto. or can you install it onto a computer with a hard disk that is not formatted?

3.Does the Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial Software include Exchange Server and if so which version of it?
